Whiteboard Alternatives

In an online course, how do you "write" words, equations, or graphs "on the whiteboard"?  Different instructors prefer different approaches; we hope one of those listed below will work for you.

  • Stylus and touchpad:  In this video Links to an external site., Professor Kim Farah talks about her XP-PEN drawing tablet and briefly compares it to the iPad.
  • Camera and handwriting:  Deirdre Donovan uses an Aduro Solid Grip Phone Holder to show writing on paper; Neil Hatem does the same with a whiteboard.
  • Shared PowerPoint Slides:  Betsy Leondar-Wright engages students by asking them to copy and paste images on shared slides.
  • Padlet:  This online post-it board helps students and instructors share, organize, and respond to information.  For example, you could ask students to share and respond to questions about a reading.
  • Virtual Whiteboard:  Zoom and BigBlueButton both offer a virtual whiteboard as one of their videoconferencing tools.
