Using Screenpal for Screen Capture
ScreenPal (formerly Screencast-O-Matic) is a free external tool that helps you record a computer screen, record yourself with a webcam, or a mixture of both. You can then embed these in Canvas. It's great for...
- recording a video lecture over a PowerPoint
- giving video feedback on student writing
- recording a course orientation, announcement, or direct video message
A free account will allow you to record fifteen minutes, which is a reasonable amount of time for any presentation. Keep in mind, you can also record your screen, narrate PowerPoints and student feedback, and host recordings through YouTube. To learn more, you can watch a video which shows how to get started, or you can download a handout that will walk you through the steps:
- Beginner's Guide Links to an external site.
- Handout for Screencast-o-Matic: Web 2.0 Tool: Screencast-o-Matic.
Also, note that the Teaching and Learning Center has a Pro account any Lasell faculty can use upon request. Faculty can record, edit, and caption content from this account. Email TLC@lasell.edu, and we can give you access.
Creating Captions for Audio/Visual Material
Keep in mind that accessible audio/visual content needs to include captions and/or transcript. This way, if the video is intended for a wide audience of students (some of whom may be deaf or heard-of-hearing), they will be able to access the same content. The Teaching and Learning Center has paid versions of Screencast-O-Matic available for interested faculty, so you can use any of these to record and caption your AV content. Please contact the TLC to learn more about how you can use these licenses.
Here are some links which show how you can do that through Screencast-o-matic or through YouTube (note: YouTube's automatic captions are generally more accurate):
